When do your skis need service?
To get the best performance from your skis and extend their lifespan, it is important that they are regularly serviced and maintained. Service and maintenance is carried out on both the underside of the ski and the steel edges. Below you will find advice and guidance on how to best maintain your skis.
The Base: When the Color Turns Gray
The underside of the skis is called the "base". If maintained with proper waxing, it ensures you have the best glide down the slope.
The base is a wear part that needs to be serviced regularly to ensure optimal performance. Lack of maintenance shortens the ski's lifespan and results in poorer glide and performance.
To assess whether the base of your ski needs servicing, you can look at the color of the base. Most skis are usually born with a black base, but if you notice that the base is starting to turn gray, it is a sign that the base is drying out and therefore needs servicing. Your skis will also last longer if you take care of them and make sure they are ready to ride between each season.
You can expect your skis to be waxed/sharpened before every ski holiday (optimally) + summer wax.
Holes in the base: Damage and cracks
If you have hit a rock or other hard object, you may have suffered small cracks or holes in the base. This damage can affect the performance and durability of your skis. It is important to have this damage repaired before you use your skis again. This will minimize the risk of further damage to your skis.
Edges: Surface rust from storage or dulling
Another indication that your skis need service is if you see rust on the edges. This can occur if the skis are stored in a damp environment, such as a basement or attic, where the temperature and humidity can vary. Rust on the edges of the skis can affect performance, as you lose grip in the snow and therefore control less well. In addition to optimizing your performance, it is important to remove surface rust, as it can develop into more permanent rust, which shortens the life of the ski.
In addition to surface rust, the edges of the skis become worn with use, which is why they need to be sharpened to maintain a strong edge grip. Lack of service means that the edges become dull and thus have a poorer cut in the snow.
