Oakley - The most innovative brand?

Why is Oakley one of the world's most innovative brands? Oakley is not just an iconic brand in eyewear and helmets – it is a brand that constantly challenges boundaries and pushes what is technologically possible. With more than 800 patents covering everything from lens technologies to advanced plastic compounds, Oakley is one of the world's leading manufacturers of eyewear and helmets.

At Gumpel & Co, we carry a carefully selected range of Oakley goggles, sunglasses and helmets because we know that quality, comfort and functionality mean everything! But what makes Oakley so special? We'll dive into that in this post, where you can read all about Oakley's innovative technologies.

What is Oakley known for?
  • Advanced lens technology that adapts to different weather and light conditions.
  • Extreme durability – their products are built to be used!
  • A fit for both glasses and helmets, where every detail has been thought through.
  • Strong design DNA that combines functionality with a distinctive look.
  • Tested by elite athletes worldwide – Oakley collaborates with top athletes to develop products that can withstand extreme conditions.

Frame technologies:
For decades, Oakley has been a leader in advanced frame technologies that combine comfort, durability and functionality.

O Matter™: Is a lightweight and extremely durable nylon-based material used in many Oakley frames. O Matter™ is designed to withstand impacts, high and low temperatures, and daily use without losing its shape. Frames made of O Matter™ are characterized by their flexibility and extreme durability.

Unobtainium®: is Oakley's exclusive rubber material used on nose pads and temples. What's special about Unobtainium® is that the material increases grip when exposed to sweat or moisture - so the glasses actually stay on better the more active you are.
Lens technology - Impact Protection
Oakley is known for going above and beyond the standards when it comes to protection. All Oakley lenses and frames are tested to ANSI Z87.1 standards, while regular eyewear typically only meets ANSI Z80.3. This is a quality test of the eyewear to ensure your safety!

High-speed test: The lenses are exposed to a 6 mm metal ball fired at 165 km/h from a distance of 1 meter. This ensures that the lenses can withstand impacts from rocks, branches or other objects that may be encountered during sports and outdoor activities.

High-voltage impact: The glasses are tested against heavy impact, such as from falls or heavy impacts. Here, a 0.5 kg steel spear is dropped from a height of just over 1 meter directly onto the glasses.
Lens technology - High Definition Optics® (HDO®)
Most Oakley lenses feature HDO, a collection of patented technologies that ensure sharpness, clarity and accuracy in the field of view. HDO® eliminates the distortions that can occur in conventional lenses, so objects are shown exactly where they are - without displacement. This makes them brilliant for sports use, where the precise location of waves, asphalt cracks or humps is essential for optimal control! At the same time, the lenses maintain optical quality, even at angles, which is important for both sports and everyday use.

What is the advantage of HDO®:
  • Clarity: Objects are seen exactly where they are, without distortion.
  • Accuracy: Even in peripheral vision, you get a faithful representation of your surroundings.
  • Optical Quality: Exceeds most ANSI standards for clarity.

Lens technology - HDPolarized®
Polarized sunglasses are designed to eliminate glare from surfaces that occurs when light is reflected horizontally and can cause glare. This is a technology that many eyewear companies use, but Oakley doesn't stop there! They have developed HDPolarized® , which is a premium version of polarized technology. Where many cheap polarized lenses may be glued together in multiple layers (creating haze and blurring), Oakley HDPolarized® is produced as one integrated unit.

Advantages of Oakley HDPolarized®:
  • 99% polarization efficiency , which almost eliminates glare completely.
  • No optical distortions because the lenses are shaped without the use of layers.
  • Ultra-light and strong construction that combines polarization with HDO® clarity.
What is oakley? Prizm™ technology?
Prizm™ is a revolutionary, patented lens technology that Oakley has been developing for decades. What's unique about Prizm is that the lenses don't just block light – they strategically block light depending on the type of Prizm used. Prizm lenses block different parts of the light spectrum, increasing contrast, detail and color nuance.

Prizm™ Benefits:
  • Amplifies key colors in specific environments (e.g. white against white in the snow).

  • Improves contrast and sharpness so you can better distinguish details.

  • Improved precision , better ability to judge distances
Is there a difference in Prizm?
Yes, there are more than eight different types of Prizm lenses, and at Gumpel & Co we primarily sell Prizm Everyday, Snow, Road and Deep Water. The different Prizm lenses differ from each other by filtering the light differently, depending on what the eye perceives best in the given situation.

Within each Prizm model, there are also different lenses with the same Prizm technology. The different lenses vary not only in appearance, but also in function – depending on how much light they let through and how much they attenuate the light.

Famous Oakley lenses – what's the difference?

Here is a brief overview of the most popular Oakley lenses so you know what each one can do:

Jade Iridium – Greenish lens with mirror finish; versatile for bright light.

Torch Iridium – Red/orange lens with mirror finish; high contrast and light blocking.

Sapphire Iridium – Blue lens with mirror finish; great for sunny conditions.

Argon – Blue shade; more specialized, used for specific environments.

Sage Gold Iridium – Golden green lens; good for mixed light conditions.

Rose Gold – Rose gold hue; softer light filtering, flattering color.

Black Iridium – Dark black lens with high light blocking; perfect for bright sun.

Tungsten Iridium – Bronze/gold lens; enhances depth and contrast.

Hi Pink – Light pink shade; for flat light and cloudy conditions.

Iced Iridium – Blue mirror finish; strong light blocking for sunny days.

Clear – Clear lens; for indoor use or dark conditions.

Q&A - Frequently Asked Questions

Are all Prizm lenses polarized?
No, not all Prizm lenses are polarized, as polarization is not always an advantage. Polarized lenses are good for sailing, for example, while for snow and cycling they can be potentially dangerous to use because a polarized lens reduces glare – which also means that glare from ice, oil stains, etc. is reduced.

What makes Oakley Prizm lenses special?
Oakley Prizm™ lenses are designed to enhance contrast and color perception, so you can more easily distinguish details in different environments. Prizm lenses are tailored for specific activities like skiing, cycling and water.

What is the difference between Prizm Road, Prizm Snow and Prizm Deep Water Polarized?

  • Prizm Road : Increases contrast on roads and makes bumps and potholes easier to see.
  • Prizm Snow : Improves contrast in snow and fog, making contours and shadows in the terrain clearer.
  • Prizm Deep Water Polarized : Reduces glare from the water surface and highlights fish and underwater details.

What does Oakley HDPolarized mean?

HDPolarized is Oakley's polarized lens technology that reduces glare from flat surfaces like water, snow and asphalt - without compromising clarity or color reproduction. They block 99% of reflected light and are designed without the typical laminate layer that other polarized lenses use.

Are Oakley lenses shock and impact resistant?
Yes. All Oakley eyewear is tested to extremely high standards for impact resistance. They meet (and often exceed) ANSI Z87.1 standards for both high velocity and high mass impact. This means they can withstand both flying objects and pressure – an important feature for sports and outdoor use.

What is the difference between O Matter and Unobtainium?

  • O Matter® : A lightweight and durable frame material that provides flexibility and comfort even during long-term use.
  • Unobtainium® : A grip-enhancing material that becomes more non-slip when exposed to sweat – often used on nose pads and eyeglass temples.

How do I choose the right Oakley model for my activity?

It depends on what you will be using the glasses for. For sports such as cycling, running, sailing and skiing, models with Prizm lenses and a good fit around the face are recommended. For everyday use, you can choose classic styles such as Holbrook or Frogskins with either standard or polarized lenses.

Are Oakley glasses available for different face shapes?
Yes. Many models are available in both standard and “Asian Fit" (for low nose bridge and narrower face) and different sizes. Some models, like Sutro and Radar EV, have extra wide visors for maximum coverage. Especially on ski goggles there is a big difference in size, as your goggles and helmet must fit your face shape. We always recommend stopping by our store and trying on both goggles, helmets and sunglasses before buying, so you are absolutely sure to get the right setup.

Are Oakley ski goggles worth the money?
Yes, Oakley's combination of technology, durability, and comfort makes them a wise choice for skiers who want the best visibility and protection.

How do Oakley helmets and ski goggles fit together?
The products are developed to function as a system, so you avoid gaps between helmet and goggles and get optimal fit and protection.
